This week we asked Munji a few questions about her recent days with Year 6 students at Unity, Blackpool!
What are transition days all about?
Transition days are supporting the huge leap that young people take from Year 6 to Year 7. For lots of students this will often mean they are going to a much larger school community, some may be leaving their friends and others may be feeling really anxious in the run up to this happening. Transition days give these future Year 7s a chance to form new friendships, ease some of their anxieties and feel more comfortable in their new environment.
What is your favourite part of delivering transition sessions?
It's so lovely to visibly see students become more confident in themselves as the day goes on. I also really enjoy seeing students who are unapologetically themselves from the first step into secondary school, with all the quirks and no nerves - it often puts others at ease to be themselves!
What did you do at Unity?
Myself and Ciara delivered our transition over 2 (unbelievably sunny!) days in Blackpool. The groups were tasked with branding their year group, which is where they design a logo, slogan and brand to represent themselves as the new Year 7. In addition to this they created merchandise (keyrings, tote bags, pencil cases), plan a presentation and showcase their brand on a placard.
How did it go?
The groups were amazing and I felt so proud watching them present! It was great to see them organise themselves and get all the tasks done. It was also wonderful to be joined by some of my Year 10 Future Ready cohort - they showed so much leadership and initiative!
