Reach for the Sky

We are now officially halfway through our new 'Reach for the Sky' Programme! The bespoke 12 week programme is funded by Stockport Council Neighbourhood Inclusion team via their ‘innovation hub’ initiative last summer (aimed at funding new projects from Stockport based social enterprises). The programme is working with four high schools across Stockport, (Harrytown, St. Anne's, Stockport Academy and Reddish Vale) , working with 15 students in each cohort. The activities during the programme are aimed at ensuring students having the most positive start to high school that they can have, and has a strong focus on Social Action within the community.

So far students have learned about the United Nations 'Sustainability Goals', developed digital skills (with The Digital Life Skills Company) and have planned and started their own social action projects. A big part of the programme is to expand their digital skills and horizons with regards to future career opportunities in this field. Reddish Vale and Stockport Academy have already had sessions learning how to produce podcasts with MIC media. whilst St Anne’s and Harrytown have visited the Sharp Project in Newton Heath. The other schools will take part in each session in the coming weeks. All schools also have photo workshops with Saz Media coming up.

For the next few weeks, leading to project completion, the students will be taking part in English and Maths boosters, and continuing to work on their Social Action Projects. Students and staff from all schools will take part in a celebration event in April which will see them present the work they have completed in their social action project.

This half term is looking busy, with cake sales, surveys, media campaigns and assemblies in the planning...amongst many other activities too. All events and campaigns will be completely student led and aimed at making a real different to their own communities. It's been a fantastic start and all the students have been passionate and committed about both teaching sustainability goals and making a real change to their community - well done everyone!
