#RCommunity students Christmas kindness

In the summer we were thrilled to receive funding from the #rtime project being run by Life Leisure (supported by The National Lottery Reaching Communities fund) to run a special community project with a group of teenagers in Brinnington, Stockport.

The whole project came about after students in a previous project said that they wanted to do something to help bring their community together, and welcome others who were moving into the area.

In September, we started working on a 12 week project that involved organising and running a community Christmas party for everyone in Brinnington. This involved planning a budget, advertising, organising activities, preparing resources and gifts for guests, gathering donations for a raffle, wrapping presents, ordering a buffet, booking a room, decorating it, cleaning up, and even convincing one of their Dad's to play the role of Father Christmas! As part of their advertising campaign, they also had workshops with local Social Enterprise Saz Media; this also resulted in them deciding to run a photo booth at the event with their new skills.

The event on the 7th December was a huge success, with lots of different members of the community coming together to chat and share a mince pie together. It was great to see everyone from toddlers to the local volleyball squad coming along to share some time together.

The event also raised over £90 which the young people decided they wanted to use to purchase gifts for young people who were going to be at Stepping Hill Hospital over the Christmas period.

Thanks for the support of Life Leisure Brinnington, all the parents involved and of course the young people for all of their hard work. They really did help to spread to Christmas cheer and bring Brinny together!
