Next Steps with Leeds Co-Op Academy

Writer's picture: Beth NunnBeth Nunn

Last week we ran our week of Next Steps activities with Co-Op Academy Leeds for the second time!

These sessions are run with Year 10 students with the aim to help get them Year 11 ready, and get them focussed on their future targets and ambitions ahead of starting their final year of school. We run them in the summer term so they have the summer holidays to reflect on the sessions and take any action that will be helpful for them when preparing for exams or college and job applications.

Here's a run down of what we covered!

Monday: Personal Statement session

  • We talked about different options for colleges and apprenticeships.

  • We explained all the different kinds of courses available, and where.

  • We looked at example personal statements.

  • Students started writing their own personal statements, including planning out core things to talk about.

  • Every Year 10 student attended a sessions during the day.

Tuesday: Speed Networking

  • We had 20 different guests join us throughout the day.

  • Our guests varied from mechanics to authors, entrepreneurs to multi hyphen careers!

  • Every student in Year 10 came along for an hour slot for the speed networking session.

  • Students moved around the room spending 6-8 minutes with different guests.

  • They heard about career journeys, current jobs and just general advice.

  • This event was energising and inspiring for both students and guests!

Wednesday: MMU visit

  • 100 students travelled to Manchester from Leeds to visit Manchester Metropolitan University.

  • The first session was a taster lecture in the Criminology department let by Karen Kent. The students got to experience what it's like to have a lecture in a lecture theatre, and learn about a new subject.

  • We took a tour of the university campus by university student ambassadors. We visited different buildings, student union, library and student hall.

  • Students enjoyed lunch on campus kindly provided by MMU Student participation team.

  • The final session was all about financial support available for university students.

The three days proved a great success getting students thinking about their Next Steps, and helped prepare them to come back for a successful final year at Coop Academy Leeds!
